As a first step, we recommend that you get vaccinations for COVID and the flu. A pneumonia vaccine may also be appropriate for some people. Unfortunately, there's no vaccine to prevent a cold.
We also recommend the following:
- Wash your hands often, for at least 20 seconds. If you cannot wash your hands, use hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces often. This includes door knobs, sink faucets, light switches, car keys, etc.
- Wear a mask in large social gatherings or for travel.
- Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, while avoiding processed foods and added sugar. Try to include garlic, onions, and ginger in your meals.
- Get regular exercise, but avoid overexerting yourself.
- Minimize stress when possible. Some ways to do this are to maintain supportive relationships, do what you can to get good sleep, and consider meditation or a few minutes of reflection every day.
- Do your best to avoid close contact with people who feel sick.
Remember, if you feel sick, you should stay home to avoid passing your illness to others. It's also a good idea to get tested for COVID. Please reach out to us or another medical provider if you get sick.
You can try the following supplements if you are worried about becoming sick:
- 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily
- Probiotics daily, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species
It's important to understand that these supplements may help, but there are no guarantees that they will stop you from getting sick.
If you feel yourself getting sick, vitamin C may help shorten how long your sickness lasts.
We know everyone wants to avoid getting sick! Read more about small things you can do that can help.
