Normal discharge not only varies from person to person, but can vary from day to day.
In general, normal, healthy vaginal discharge:
- Can vary from thin and watery to thick and sticky.
- Ranges from clear to white, with slight variations.
- Has a mild, musky odor that does not smell offensive or strongly fishy.
- Can vary in amount but is usually manageable with panty liners.
- May leave some clear or white stains, or wet spots, in your underwear.
- May have a brown tinge at the end of your menstrual cycle.
We expect discharge to change with:
- Your menstrual cycle
- Pregnancy
- Sexual arousal
- Stress and diet
A change in discharge might indicate a need for medical evaluation. Â Let us (or another provider) know if you notice:
- A foul odor or unusual color
- Persistent itching or irritation
- Pain or burning
- A sudden change in consistency, such as a cottage cheese-like texture
- A rapid increase in the amount of discharge
Wash with water only or a gentle, non-irritating soap.
Avoid things that can disrupt the health balance in your vagina such as:
- Douching
- Vaginal perfumes or deodorants
- Vaginal cleansers or other âfeminine hygieneâ products
- Scented tampons or pads
It's common to wonder if your vaginal discharge is normalâyou're not alone!
